Preparing equipment and property for an event
One of the biggest concerns in a flood is the total damage that water and residue will deliver on property. It is important to spend the time, money, and energy in preparation of an event and realize the reward when damage is minimized.
Besides confirming that all property is covered by comprehensive flood insurance, it is important to identify and catalog all equipment for insurance purposes, determine which equipment can be moved out of harms way, and designate an area for storing those supplies. For fixed equipment, a plan should be devised for protecting it from water damage. There are various methods and products: installing concrete barriers, sandbagging, and aqua dam installations to name a few.
It is also important to consider the damage that an over-stressed sewage system will cause when back pressure is put on the system and that sewage is forced up drainage outlets, toilets, or sinks. It will be important to have a capping system or plan ready in place in order to avoid this type of indirect flood damage, even if the property is not in the direct path of the flood event.
